Researched by Josh Owens, Carlisle Cattle are subdivided into primary groups. European-bred cattle are known as Bos Tarus while Indian or humped cattle are Bos indicus. Dairy cattle are Bos Tarus. The five leading countries in cattle population numbers in millions are India (193), Brazil (152), United States (101), China (91), and Russia (49). The five leading countries in consuming beef products in millions are United States (25), Russia (7), Brazil (7), Argentina (6), and China (5). The five leading countries in per capita consumption in carcass pounds are Argentina, 152; Urugray, 133; United States, 96; Canada, 78; and Australia, 77. There are103.8 million beef cattle managed by 909,100 producers. There are 9.4 million head of dairy cattle operated by 140,000 producers. The five top beef producing states in rank of economic value in millions of dollars are Texas, $6,296; Nebraska, $5,158; Kansas, $4,235; Colorado, $2,081; and Oklahoma, $1,759. The top five dairy producing states in rank of economic value in millions of dollars are California, $3,078; Wisconsin, $2,916; New York, $1,494; Pennsylvania, $1,458; and Minnesota, $1,186. The normal body temperature of cattle is 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit. The standard gestation period of a cow is 285 days. Breeds of cattle may vary from that figure either shorter or longer depending on genetics, environmental factors, and management procedures used. Cattle provide the most complete food known in the world through their milk. For the past several years the KC Farm has been raising calves for FFA and 4-H members to use for projects. Several have made the "Sale of Champions" at various shows including the Rusk County Youth Project Show. We have moved in the purebred Angus business to establish a quality
reputation for the KC Agricultural Science Department. These cattle will
provide better quality cattle for students to study and to show. Through
artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET), we plan to improve
the quality each year and also to study those technologies before we are
exposed to them at senior colleges. We believe our new programs (AI, ET,
Show Team) will attract more incoming freshmen to be part of our Agriculture
Program here at Kilgore College. This is really an exciting time to be
